Tom and Jerry

Animation Practitioner (Year 2)

As part of my Animation Practitioner module, I decided to explore cartoony-style animation. I found a Tom and Jerry rig by Artem Dubyna on Gumroad, which felt like the perfect choice due to its potential for exaggerated, dynamic movement.

I completed the animation in one month using Maya. The project was set up at 1920x1080 resolution and 25fps. Like Teddy and Jo, I use the split panel layout, with the fixed camera on the left and perspective camera on the right so I could animate while checking both angles at the same time. Because of the fast, exaggerated motion, I mainly used straight-ahead animation. Once the shots were done, I edited and combined the shots in Adobe Premiere Pro.

One of the challenges I faced was timing. Since I closely referenced a 2D scene from the original Tom and Jerry, I had to adjust the timing slightly for 3D. I slowed it down a bit while keeping it in sync with the audio. In the end, I’m happy with how it turned out.
