The Proposal: Teddy and Jo

Animation Practitioner (Year 2)

For my Animation Practitioner module, I specialized in CG Animation because it's what I've been most interested in. I chose the Minerva and Mukuru rigs by Ramon Angaro from Gumroad because of their ability to showcase expressive facial expressions and movement. These rigs were perfect for my first scene, which is The Proposal: Teddy and Jo, from "Little Women" (2019).

I completed the animation over 2 months using Maya. I set up the project with a 1920x1080 resolution at 25fps, using a split panel layout in Maya, fixed camera on the left and perspective camera on the right. This setup allowed me to animate while checking both angles simultaneously. For simpler movements, I used straight-ahead animation, while for more complex actions, I blocked the poses first and refined them using the graph editor. Once the shots were complete, I edited and combined them in Adobe Premiere Pro.

The main challenge was ensuring the movement felt natural and alive, avoiding robotic motions. Paying attention to these details was important for making the animation feel realistic.
